Description

The Veil Nebula (NGC 6960, 6992, 6995) is a supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. It is bright enough to be visible at the eyepiece in a modest aperture telescope under dark skies as an extended fuzzy but it truly shows its colors (no pun intended) when imaged using narrowband emission line filters. The shock wave of the star explosion that took place between 3,000BC and 6,000BC is still expanding and gives rise to the observed filamentary structure.

In this rendition, I chose the HHO gold-blue palette to show the hydrogen (gold) and oxygen (blue) emissions of this cloud of ionized gas and dust in the middle of the one of the busiest corners of the Milky Way. The Veil is roughly 1,600 light years from Earth and it is about 110 light years across. It is the visible light part of the Cygnus Loop, which includes a strong radio source (W78), as well as X-ray emissions.
