Description

A crop from my wide field image.

I couldn't resist any longer - expensive equipment but I can always sell a kidney if I run into difficulties.

For the record:

1. The Astrodon filters came well-packaged and were very clean as far as I could tell.

2. The ZWO ASI1600 MM Pro seems to be working perfectly – no driver issues or any other problems.

3. The ZWO filter wheel works well enough, but I discovered when taking darks that it actually lets light in from the side (where the wheel adjust is located). Had to cover the gap with black insulation tape.

Have not had a chance to do any imaging until recently (very bad wild fires near my location – lots of smoke) so was very impatient and skipped some important steps. Read tutorials for combining color channels only diagonally so this could probably all be a lot better.

Also, my next move as far as equipment is concerned really should be auto-guiding (no autoguiding means short subs). I know that the stars can be sharper even though PI did a good job aligning and stacking. Another problem I did not anticipate is that focusing is more difficult in narrowband (or at least it was for me). I do not think the subs were as well focused as they could have been and the image is blurred as a result.

I'm pleased with this first test though given my LP is pretty bad. Stars are definitely less bloated and the nebula more detailed than in my OSC image. Still, a long way to go. Other people here have acquired much better images of the same object with almost identical equipment. Probably a lot to do with post-processing – my effort was very basic.

Red: Ha

Green: 0.95*OIII + 0.05*Ha

Blue: 0.95*OIII + 0.05*Ha

Still had to adjust color after combining the channels because stars were too red.
