Description

I have wanted to do a mosaic of this area for 2 years. I started it last summer as a 4-panel mosaic but the weather killed my attempts.

I decided to try and reframe this into a two-panel mosaic so I could get more data per panel and a higher SNR. I thought I had planned it so I could use the 4-panel data but found it wouldn't actually work. So I had to toss last year's Ha data. Just as well because I was going from the Orion Ha filter to the Astrodon. Thankfully I finally got my Ha filter back from Astrodon and was able to complete the project. I actually thought I had closer to a 1:1 of Ha and O3 data. That's what I get for thinking.

As usual, I have tried various processing techniques. I ended up doing a straight HOO for the color data, took it into PS and killed it with dust and scratches. This helped with the different sized stars (3nm vs 5nm) and made them look more natural which I feel gives the nebula the spotlight with higher fidelity. I pulled the greens back a bit. I did a max(Ha,O3) for the Lum. Processed that with light NR. I think the final version was stretched with Masked stretch then combined. Then the NR. Masked LHE to get a bit more contrast in the nebula and add a bit of depth/dynamic range to it.

Then RGB working space to RGB data, LRGB combine, I found I needed to do background neutralization to get some of the red and blue cast/gradients to be toned down. Then curves to adjust the color a bit more and add a bit of separation from the background. I normally then take it into PS and play with highpass but it looks to be adding more noise than improvement.
