Miraculously, I got another clear night. I decided it had been a while since I had imaged the Cocoon Nebula, and I had never done it with this camera, so I decided to give it a try. The Moon was far enough gone I also decided it was worth trying LRGB rather than narrowband, and this is the result. It’s much better than my best previous image of this target; I was happy to see some of the dark dust lane showing up around the nebula.

Subject: IC 5146, Cocoon Nebula

Scope: AT8IN+High Point Scientific Coma Corrector

Filters: ZWO 31 mm diameter unmounted LRGB

Mount: EQ-6 (EQMOD 2.000j)+PEC

Guiding: Orion Thin Off-axis Guider + DSI IIc +PHD 2.6.5 (Win 10 ASCOM)

Camera: ASI1600MM-Cool, -20 °C, Gain 139 Offset 21

Acquisition: Sequence Generator Pro 3.0.2.94

Exposure: 59x300 L, 20x300 R, G, & B

Stacking: Deep Sky Stacker 4.1.1 (64-bit) dark+flat+bias, κ-σ stacking with κ = 1.5.

Processing: StarTools 1.4.332: Combined R, G, & B in StarTools. Cropped and wiped (vignetting), applied default color module settings except used “cap green to yellow”. Denoised without any deconvolution. Cropped and wiped L data the same way and deconvoluted before using untrack denoising. In Photoshop, used “shrink stars” liberally on the L data (otherwise the stars were pretty badly saturated). Used L on the RGB, and boosted the saturation a bit. Used several rounds of “increase star color” to even out the color in the stars. Deep space noise reduction, then AstroFrame.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
