Description

The other night I was collecting data on another project when my niece, an astronomy student, sent me photos of the newly-discovered supernova in NGC 4647, taken from her school's observatory.  I was instantly inspired to determine whether I could see it from my yard with my C6--I could!

I suspended my other project for a couple hours to capture this rare event.  It's astounding that a single exploding star can be seen from 63 million light years away--and that it can outshine the entire galaxy that contains it, the ultra compact dwarf UCD-1 on the outskirts of M60, and even many nearby stars in the field of view!
