Description

Messier 15 is both one of the oldest (12 billion years) and probably the most densely packed globular clusters in our Milky Way, about 33,600 light-years from us. The core has "collapsed" resulting in an enormous number of stars that are packed around what may be a central black hole, though that has not been proven. While M15 is about 200 light years across in total, about one-half of its stars--some 30,000--are within just the inner 22 light-years. It is also one of the few globular clusters that hosts a planetary nebula, Pease 1. Pease 1 is "visible" in this photo, but is literally only a pixel or two in this image--it needs a much larger telescope to be resolved.
