Description

My second night at a remote Oregon dark sky site looked doomed midday because of a pall of high smoke blowing in from forest fires on the other side of Oregon. Luckily, a high wind kicked up and blew it all away while I was taking a 2 hour early evening nap. I woke to crystal clear skies that had a weirdly transparent southern horizon. Accordingly I spent a lot of time observing low southern objects as they passed the meridian. Here is one of my favorites, NGC253, which I have observed visually on several occasions, but had not yet imaged. Amazing network of dust lanes that are only hinted at visually. Certainly not as crisp as it would be if it was overhead, of course. It was as good as it gets from my latitude though, where it was only 20 degrees above the horizon as it passed the meridian.

Description: Improved version of the same image: better software tools (Fitswork 4), and better skills on my part. A couple of saturated stars, but I'll fix that next time I image it.
