Description

The five galaxies of Stephan's Quintet include two galaxies that have collided (NGC 7318A and NGC 7318B,) another galaxy in the neighborhood along with NGC 7320 that sits in the foreground. The blue color of the NBC 7320 is a strong clue that it lies closer than the redder and more distant interacting galaxies. NGC 7320C (the small barred spiral to the right of the main group) is not a part of the Quintet but it has a tidal tail that ties it to NGC 7319 so there are probably five galaxies tied together in the same distant region of space. Photons from these galaxies have traveled for 210 - 340 million years before reaching Earth.

At only 3.5 arc-minutes, the angular size of this cluster is fairly small and each galaxy is a bit fainter than 14th magnitude so it is not an easy object to image. This data was obtained with my newly repaired FL-ML16803 camera over a few nights with moderately good seeing. Processing was quite difficult because of the small size of the image on the sensor. Keep in mind that this image only shows a region covering a little less than 3/8 of the dimensions of the KAI-16803 sensor. This data was 2x drizzled and cropped to produce this result. A couple of years ago, this object was an inspiration to abandon my DSLR camera and move to a mono-CCD camera. I'd really like to get more detail on this object so it may become a new inspiration to move to a bigger scope. Under the right conditions I suspect that a 20" or 24" should show noticeably more detail.
