AAPOD² du 28 décembre 2018!

La réalisation d'un rêve d'enfant : photographier la "galaxie de la roue de charrette" (ESO350-40) dans la constellation du Sculpteur !

Bien connue sous la version du HST, mais peu imagée au niveau amateur… à 500 millions d'années-lumière, elle est en effet de très petite taille apparente (1,1' x 0,9'). Il m'aura fallu recourir au RC de 1m de Chilescope et ses 6,7m de focale pour cette image ; et ça reste petit…

A cette distance de 500 millions d'années-lumière, son Redshift est de 0,03, soit une vitesse d'éloignement de 10.000 km par seconde !

Cette galaxie est exceptionnelle de par sa structure annulaire : il s'agit d'une ancienne galaxie spirale qui a été traversée par une autre galaxie plus petite (sans doute l'une des deux petites galaxies à proximité immédiate) et dont l'onde de choc a généré la création d'étoiles jeunes (bleues) dans la couronne exterieure.

A kid's dream for me : to photograph the "Cartwheel Galaxy" (aka ESO350-40) in Sculptor.

The most famous version is the one made by the HST, but it's a very rare object for amateurs because of its distance (500 million LY away) and its apparent size (1,1' x 0,9'). Even with the Chilescope's 1m RC (and its 6,7m of focal lenght), it is still a little target !

Its Redshift is 0,03, which corresponds to a recessional Velocity of 10.000 km/s !

The galaxy was once a normal spiral galaxy before it apparently underwent a head-on collision with a smaller companion (probably one of the little galaxies just around on the image). When the nearby galaxy passed through the Cartwheel Galaxy, the force of the collision caused a powerful and high speed shock wave through the galaxy, which created a starburst and the bluish ring around the galaxy.

Description: We see more and more comparisons made between amateur photos and the James Webb Telescope photos... but often, the differences are a bit "erased" by reducing the size of the JWST image.
Here is a realistic comparison between the superb JWST image of the galaxy ESO350-40, and my own image taken with a 1m diameter telescope in Chile (which is already not a small telescope...) : one can see the huge difference between the two images, in terms of signal and resolution !
The 2 images are here in full 100% version (before reduction of the whole for the left picture). And to make it even more telling, it's even better to leave the JWST image at 100% like on the image to really appreciate the level of details !
