Description

By chance I doug out a pic of my first DSO 29 years ago... Basically my astrohobby slumbered for 25 years and was, apart from a few single events during that time, resurrected only shortly ago after I "discovered" stacking.

The pic shows Omega Centauri, NGC 5139, taken from light polluted Johannesburg, South Africa, on 04.08.1989. No computers, autoguiding or digital photography back then. Just an illuminated crosshair eyepiece (holder, Vixen GA 2 in this case), RA motor and in my case a stiff manual DEC knob (which was quite a guidingkiller), chemicals and a dark lab.

The pic was exposed 6.5 min with a Soligor 300mm f/4.5 lens on Kodak 103 a-f, piggyback on a 100/1000 newton. It was actually a spectroscopic film (astrophotographically usually used in combination with HII filters) and grainier than the usual Kodak Tri-X-Pan or T-Max 400 I used. Don´t know why I used that one, probably to use up the film. The paper for the positive was a hard one (contrast 5). I overcropped it, guess as I was thrilled just to be able to crop so heavily (actually I had to climb onto the table in order to be able to push the head of the setup right up; could use the darklab at school). For nowadays standards not really a nice pic but I was quite happy back then :-)
