Description

This image captures a number of minor objects located in the constellation of Cassiopeia, including a star cluster, a reflection nebula, and two dark nebulae. The objects are located in a very dusty section of the Milky Way, as evidenced by the foggy halos around the bright stars. This dust is also responsible for a "color excess" of many of these stars, where the observed color of a star does not match its spectral type, with stars reddened by about 1 magnitude on average.

The large open cluster at the upper center of the image is NGC 654. The cluster surrounds the bright 7th magnitude yellowish supergiant star, which is believed to be part of the cluster. The cluster has about 80 stars and is about 10,000 light years away. The small, faint, bluish reflection nebula towards the top of the cluster is VdB 6.

The winding dark nebula at the bottom of the image consists of 3 objects - LDN 1332, LDN 1334, and LDN 1337. The dark nebula seems to be a continuous shape although is has been given 3 separate Lynds Dark Nebula designations. Beverly Turner Lynds was an American astronomer who, 50 years ago, created the Lynds Bright Nebulae (LBN) and Lynds Dark Nebulae (LDN) catalogs based on her visual review of the Palomar Sky Survey.
