Description

I had no idea what to expect from this object, but it was going to be a real challenge for my gear.

From my latitude, NGC 7293 only reached between 15 and 18 degrees elevation during imaging. Guiding was problematic and the stars are slightly elongated due to oscillating overshoot in the DEC axis. Light pollution was another concern because it gets much worse near the horizon. I measured the sky quality at that altitude using my DSLR and Sigma 105 mm f/2.8 lens, and calculated 17.2 mag/arcsec2. This planetary nebula should have relatively bright oxygen emission, but even 20 minutes of exposure barely showed any nebulosity due to the light pollution.

Despite all these issues, I am pretty happy with the appearance of the core and visibility of the Northeast arc in my image.
