Mosaic was done to show the extension of the SMC galaxy to the far left. (usually cutoff by imagers..)

It consists out of 4 quadrants,

each quadrant was exposed and filtered with 44 Ha and 44 OIII images.

Exposures were done from August 4th 2018 to 20th of September 2018.

We were trying to get a near RGB image which shows more details than usual images with RGB filters by using for this only OIII and Ha filters.

Its a cooperation between: Gerald Wechselberger - Franz Gruber and Dr. Thomas Schröfl.

The Large (LMC) and the Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds are irregular dwarf galaxies near to our own galaxy, the milkyway. They are bound gravitational to our Milkyway also.

The SMC is 200.000 lightyears distant from us and 75.000 lightyears from the LMC.

The SMC spans around 7.000 light years and hold some 100 million stars with appproximately 7 Billion solar masses. The SMC (Small Magellanic Cloud) is bound to the LMC (Large Magellanic Cloud) by a bridge of gaseous matter. This is also a hint for the gravitional interaction between these 2 dwarf galaxies. This bridge is home of new starbuilding, good visible by the red ionized hydrogen. Many RR-Lyrae stars were detected in this bridge with ESA's GAIA mission. These RR-Lyrae stars are low mass (50% of the sun) stars which exist in the HR Diagram on the horizontal branch in the strip of instability. In this phase these stars are in minimum 10 Mrd years old and are a good indicator for the history of development of a starsystem.

Please note, in the image the two small lower left hydrogen clouds are also part of the SDC-LMC Bridge.

If you have a look at the image annotated with PGC galaxies there are many many of them in this area except around the SMC. As this area of the sky is full of galaxies this leads to the assumption that the SMC is covered by a dust and gaseous halo so the missing galaxies are maybe based on the extinction by the SMC.

At REC 1h30m and Dec -73:30 you find the very slow x-ray pulsar SXP1062 with his small shell. It was detected 2011 and has a rotation period of 18 minutes.
