Description

M31, the Great Galaxy in Andromeda, or “Antsa” as we call it here. The great galaxy in the north has many names.

I could say that I found the spark for astrophotography after photographing this galaxy with my then newly acquired DSLR. I wasn’t sure if it could be done, but I tried and .. there it was, an almost identifiable blob that definitely was not a star! As my skills and equipment progressed I have returned to this every couple of years, always aiming for a better result. The journey has been long from trying to image through severe light pollution to our own remote-controlled observatory. Like always, I feel that this is a great improvement to my previous picture of M31, let’s see how this looks like again in a couple of years!

The second picture is interesting. It is the narrowband H-alpha image with the red continuum of the galaxy substracted away. The end result is an image that shows only the areas with pure emission, making the knots and twists very clear. Some spiral structures in the center of the galaxy is also visible.
