DETAILS: Imaged 090405 and 090505 with the 12.5" Truss RC on an ME German Equatorial Robotic Mount, using an ST-10XME at f6.8, and TruBalance filters. Four hours of Luminance combined with one hour each of RGB. CCDSharp used on Luminance, With RGB combined in MaxIm DL. LRGB constructed in Photoshop CS. Deconvolved Luminance and reprocessed 112805.

COMMENTARY: NGC 6946 is a face-on sprial galaxy in the Constellation Cygnus at an approximate distance of 20 million light-years. Many supernova have occured in this galaxy. The red-tinted star just barely visible in the lower left hand corner of the image is a carbon star of spectral class N, which is a red giant with large amounts of carbon molecules, including c2, cn, ch, co, and co2, giving the star a "ruby" red color seen through an eyepiece. A new supernova, SN 2004et, first discovered in October 2004 can also be seen in this image

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
