When I went outside tonight I had no idea what I would image. There were scattered clouds and an almost Full Moon washing out the sky. To make matters worse, as soon as I set up my gear I began having heavy moisture problems. I looked around trying to find a target that would be the least affected by the bright Moon light. There was only a small cloud or two around Pegasus and when I saw Mirach I remembered NGC 404. It's been about a year and a half since I last imaged this object. I first saw NGC 404 in a Sky and Telescope magazine and it was love at first sight. An image of this object does not produce the jaw dropping awe that an image of an expansive and beautifully colored nebula does but it does have a simple beauty. In fact I think the beauty is the simplicity of the image. I've viewed this object twice through an eye piece and it is definitely a challenge. It took me a while to figure out that I had to crank up the magnification in order to increase the contrast between NGC 404 and Mirach. Since I last viewed this object the powers that be built a Federal prison two miles from my house and two plywood plants also went up. The light pollution is so bad that it's impossible to see from my back yard anymore. Sorry guys I never know when to shut up. Please enjoy my most recent image of NGC 404. Also you really need to view the image at full resolution because the galaxy is small.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
