I was targeting a cluster of dark nebula about half a degree southeast of Omega 2 Aquilae and got way more than I expected. I set the black point on the darkest spot in the dark nebula and a white point on a G star as best I could and subtracted out a little greenish sky glow to get these wild colors. Its was a very dark sky in the middle of the night, so I wasn't getting any gradients. The brown shades are from the dark nebula, but I was not expecting all the blue and purple hues in the scene. I suppose they must be H-alpha emission maybe with some H-beta mixed in, but I don't know where the deeper blue tints are coming from. Reflection nebula? The blue-purple tits somehow look more like emission nebula to me.

You can also clearly see how much the interstellar dust clouds attenuate the stars beyond them, making them yellowish or even reddish.

I noticed that a lot of people seem to be dropping the cores of dark nebula almost to black to produce the appearance of very sharp edged dark nebula in this region of the sky, but the nebula really aren't black and are not sharp edged at all at this scale of 1 arc second per pixel.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
