Description

This object is a hydrogen emission nebula located 8000 light years away in the constellation of Vulpecula. This region is excited by the medium size star at the bottom center of the image, not by the visually larger stars in the upper half of the image. Faint dark dust lanes can be seen running through parts of Sh2-88.

In addition to the main nebula at the bottom, two smaller knots of nebulosity appear towards the top of the image (Sh2-88A left and Sh2-88B right). These knots are believed to be star forming regions, each about 1 minute diameter. The left knot also contains a reflection nebula, which tints the knot a purplish color.

The star field in this area is dense and colorful, especially on the left and lower areas of the image. But despite my best efforts to the contrary, overall I don't find this part of the sky to be very exciting.
