Description

The Triangulum galaxy is the third largest galaxy in our local group at an estimated 50,000 light years in diameter. M33 is also the second closest large galaxy to the Milky Way after Andromeda at approximately 3 million light years away. Because it is so close it is amazing the amount of detail you can pick out including a number of star forming regions such as NGC 604 which appears at roughly the 9 o'clock position in my photo. NGC 604 is a huge nebula at 1,500 light years across and contains 200 young massive stars. NGC 604 is so large that if it were in our night sky at the same distance as the Orion Nebula it would be over 50 deg. in diameter! One cool fact I learned when reading up on M33 is that it is actually pretty close to the Andromeda galaxy (750,000 light years) and that the two galaxies may be gravitationally bound, at this distance astronomers in either galaxy would have an excellent view of their neighbor galaxy.

Imaging Notes: This was to be my September project but a lack of clear nights extended it well into October. To date this is the longest total exposure time I've used in an image. Despite this I still had a heck of a time processing this one perhaps in part because I'm still learning the best settings for my ZWO 1600 given my current setup. I've order some narrowband filters and hope to add some Ha data on M33 yet this fall.
