Description

This image captures three adjacent objects - a dark nebula, a faint blue reflection nebula and an open cluster. The cluster and nebula are located 2000 light years away in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia.

This is a young cluster with many bright blue stars, although plenty of orange stars are also seen throughout the image. The reflection nebula van den Bergh 4 (vdB 4) is seen in the center of the image. Above and to the left of the reflection nebula is the dusty dark nebula LDN 1302. The considerable amount of dust in this area can be seen be looking carefully at the extent of small orange stars throughout the image. The dust has absorbed the blue light of these stars, making them look more red than they actually are.

Unlike many object nicknames, I think that this cluster has an appropriate name. I can actually see the bright star outline of the hull of a boat here, and the nebulosity roughly corresponds to the sail. The "boat" is angled 45 degrees to the left of vertical, as if it is sailing left and down. I added a second, annotated image to help with the recognition.
