Description

The Bat Nebula (rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise, or your rotate head 90 degrees anti-clockwise to see The Bat) is part of the Veil Nebula, the circular remains of an ancient supernova that exploded about 8000 years ago. The star was massive, 20 times the mass of our sun, the remains of which now span 3 degrees of our sky. The Bat here is about the size of the full moon apparently, but is actually 12 light years across, nearly 1400 light years distant. This is an object one needs to come back to, as the undulations of these knots continue to move: the Hubble telescope has captured these enormous clouds moving, check out their youtube video compiled over the years!
