Description

The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is an emission nebula in the constellation Perseus and lies some 1000 light years away. It is nearly 2.5 degrees long and can be seen visually with a Hydrogen-beta filter in the winter months. Its emission is due to the excitation of this H-beta line by the nearby blue O7 star, xi Persei to the right of the nebula.
