Description

The Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) is a HII region located in the Perseus Spiral Arm of the Milky Way, in the Cassiopeia constellation, approximately 10,000 light years away. The nebula is illuminated by a hot, blue, central star cluster and spans over 80 light years in size. Dark interstellar clouds of very cold gas and dust (Bok Globules) block some of the glowing red gas and make up the mouth and eye of the Pacman. The dense clouds of dust drive active star formation, producing high mass stars which are responsible for much of the energy pumped into our galaxy over its lifetime.

This image of the Pacman Nebula was created using a 50/50 blend of Ha and R filter data on the Red channel, pure G filter data on the Green channel, and a 50/50 blend of Oiii and B filter data on the Blue channel. Ha data was also deconvolved and added back in as luminance. Data was acquired over 2 nights on 10/27/2018 and 11/2/2018. Image calibration, integration, and noise reduction were completed in PixInsight. Additional color processing and sharpening were completed in Photoshop.
