Description

This is NGC 7331 and the Deer Lick group of galaxies.

I captured the data for this in the last couple of nights at the Oregon Star Party 2018. Conditions were pretty smoky and this affected the data. There was a significant amount of blue extinction, so I needed to adjust the color calibration.

I used PixInsight for processing and PhotometricColorCalibration. Normally, I would calibrate color using an average spiral galaxy. Due to the smoke, this resulted in a very red image. To compensate, I tried using a number of different white references and eventually settled on a type KIV star which gave the best color balance. Even with that, the galaxy core was tinted significantly red once the image was stretched. To address that, I used CurvesTransformation on the red channel and pulled it down just a little bit at the .75 level.

I'm mostly happy with the result. I think that some of the brighter stars still look a little bit bluer than they should. I might be able to improve this with some desaturation with an appropriate star mask.

The equipment used was as follows:

Celestron EdgeHD 8 with Celestron reducer at F/7

ZWO ASI1600MM-cool with Astrodon Gen2 RGB filters

Astro-Physics AP1600GTO-CP4 with Absolute Encoders

Exposures were 181x60 red, 176x60 green and 165x60 blue.

Initial processing, through image integration, was done in CCDStack. Everything else was done in PixInsight.
