Description

This time of the year the 4 closest planets are all visible simultaneously - allowing astrophotographers to "planet-hop" when imaging. This show Mars, which was imaged with Saturn, Venus and Jupiter over a 2 hour period. To the naked eye they are mostly brighter than most stars, and are aligned along the ecliptic, the plane of the gaseous proto-planetary disk from which they condensed. On Mars, just past it's closest approach to earth in the last 15 years, a planetary-scale dust storm over the past few months is finally clearing allowing some detail to be seen.
