Smoke and storms have meant grabbing a few hours of data here and there over the last several weeks. With a break in the rain this weekend, I finally gathered the last of the OIII data I needed for this image of the California Nebula.

The color assignments of this image are the traditional HST palette with SII red, Ha green, and OIII blue. In the processing I chose coloration that emphasized contrasting the contributions Ha, OIII, and SII to the nebula structure, where each gas was the main contributor (red, green, or blue), and where there are mixtures of the three gases (gold, turquoise, values of the primary colors). The result was a glimpse into the details of how the three contribute to the structure of the nebula, as well as making a very colorful image.
