Description

This is my first narrowband image and I've been blown away with the level of contrast possible through narrowband imaging in comparison to LRGB. I played around with different color combinations and originally settled on SHO but changed to HOS after adding more data in late December.

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of the most recent recorded supernova explosion in the Milky Way, documented in 1054 by Chinese astronomers. Over the past thousand years the resulting nebula has expanded out to its current diameter of 11 light years and is continuing to expand at 930 miles/second. As a remnant of a type 2 supernova the crab nebula contains a wide variety of elements. It was for this reason (and the fact that it is in a good part of the sky for a long observing run this time of year) that I chose M1 as my first target using narrowband filters. With the narrowband filters you could clearly see the different locations and structure of the ionized Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Sulfur in the nebula when comparing the subs for each filter.
