Description

Finally finishing off a new target after over a month of cloudy skies. I wanted to attempt processing the Horsehead Nebula in the SHO palette, as it is not often done in this palette. I kept it light and airy not to kill some of the fainter nebulosity. I am still getting used to my first Newtonian; the 12" GSO Truss Imaging Newtonian. Collimation with a newt that has an offset secondary mirror and a conical primary mirror has proven to be challenging.

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion. The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The nebula was first recorded in 1888 by Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming on a photographic plate taken at the Harvard College Observatory. The Horsehead Nebula is approximately 1500 light years from Earth. It is one of the most identifiable nebulae because its resemblance to a horse's head.
