Description

B33 - Horsehead Nebula

NGC2024 - Flame Nebula

Canon t5i at 800 ISO through a William Optics 66 SD @ f/5.9

total 5 hours and 32 minutes of 2 minute auto-guided subs using a CLS light pollution filter. Taken from my front yard with a blazing street light.

I've posted one version of this very interesting area before with the old camera. Once again, so. much. red. with the new camera!

The bright star in the middle-left of the image is the leftmost (eastern) star in Orion's belt. The flame-like nebula and the red in the background comes from hydrogen gas that has been excited by the light from the nearby stars causing the faint reddish glow. The dark areas that make up the horse head and the area below it is made up of dark dust that is blocking light from coming through. You can just barely see hints of variation/clumpiness in the gas that more exposure time would help draw out.

I've already got 5+ hours of time spent on this, but it is tempted to try to double that to see how much detail I can draw out. We'll see. Too few clear nights and so many objects to image...
