Moving Mountains: Mars with Celestron 6SE

- 10,000 frames on average per image (10th Aug: 9,500, 11th Aug: 13,333, 16th Aug: 8,000).

- Generally good seeing, variable transparency.

I've been meaning to complete this mosaic for some time now, but an incredibly busy period at work kept getting in the way!

A series of captures from the 10th through 16th August allowed me to image Olympus Mons from a variety of perspectives; the resulting images are presented out of chronological order here for artistic effect. The Tharsis mountains are also *just* visible in the final frame.

Trying to match each image as closely as possible presented an interesting processing challenge, as did trying to eke out as much detail for Olympus Mons as possible with my little 6 incher. Inevitably, the images look a little over-processed as a result ... but it's rewarding to see the big mountain so clearly. Colours were kept muted as I found this helped with contrast for the mountains.

Hungry for more (fine) detail though, and there's only one thing for it: more aperture!! The C11 is very attractively priced these days ... perhaps Santa will be good to me this Christmas. ;)

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
