This image wasn't really expected. A few nights ago the sky was mostly clear -- but with some high, thin cloud and an 84% illuminated Moon.
It was ideal for testing equipment ... which I needed to do. So, the imaging rig was set up the backyard, things were tested, including zeroing in on a target, testing the sub acquisition, etc.
Well, things went fairly smoothly and I decided to just keep on collecting Ha subs as long as I could.
At the end, there were 100 X 60s in Ha of The Heart Nebula. Because of the thin cloud, 22 of them were rejected and it's worth noting that some of the subs included in this integrated image still also have some very thin cloud in them, detracting from contrast.
I live within the light dome of a large city (Toronto, Canada), so the sky here certainly has its challenge for imagers.
At the end of it all, I opted to process the lion's share of Ha images into this result.
Not bad for testing equipment on a marginal night ....
It may be worth noting that I also tried an integration with all 100 minutes, including the 22 min which had some thin cloud. These subs were not bad ... you could still see The Heart reasonably well. However, when these compromised subs were included in the integration the overall result was significantly less that the image here.
So, with fewer -- but better -- subs, the overall result is better.

Description: This image is updated to reduce the "darkest" regions in the nebula ... make them less contrasty.... When processing the original, I felt they might be a bit too obvious but chose to ignore that slight nagging thought, during that original workflow. After having a friend (and astrophotographer) comment on these dark regions -- and after getting away from the original image for a day or so -- I opted to go after these dark regions and get this revised image. I do prefer the new result. Used PhotoShop to attack these specific areas .... with the Layers process.
