Description

This tight pair of galaxies in Coma Berenices is made up of the edge-on NGC 4302 on the left and a more face-on NGC 4298 on the right. The are estimated at 60 million light years distance. NGC 4302 is 5.2x1 arc minute while the other is 3.2 x 2 arc minutes.

Date: Apr 12,29, May 4,6,10,11 2008 processed Dec 2018

Location: New Ringgold PA

Optics: Meade LX200R 12 inch at f/10

Mount: Paramount ME

Camera: SBIG ST-8XME / CFW-8

Guiding: ST-8XME integral guiding chip controlled by Maxim CCD

Exposure: LRGB (color 2x2 bin): Luminance: 10x10 min, R:5x8 min, G:5x8 min, B:10x9 min for a total of 4.5 hrs. (30 subs at 540 sec avg each)

Processing: Image acquisition using CCD Autopilot. Initial processing was done using Maxim DL with subsequent processing with Photoshop.

Comments: The f/10 imaging system lets me zoom in on these relatively small (as CCD FOVs go) galaxies. What an interesting pair! I can't remember looking at these visually.
