Description

A wide-field HaRGB image of the spectacular nebula IC 1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The image was taken with a mighty little Rokinon 135 f2 lens and ZWO ASI183MM Pro camera over a few nights in late September and early November 2018. The wide-field imaging setup was riding piggyback on the Stellarvue APO SVA130T triplet mounted on the Orion HDX-110 EQ-G mount.

The image is a combination of Ha and RGB data. The luminance was produced using Ha and synthetic RGB luminance. R channel is a blend of the broadband and narrowband images. The narrowband exposures were taken with lens stopped at f2.8 and camera gain 53, while RGB data was captured at f4.0 and gain 0.

Ha: 16x2000s (@ f2.8, Gain 53, bin1x1)

R: 12x600s (@ f4.0, Gain 0, bin1x1)

G: 8x600s (@ f4.0, Gain 0, bin1x1)

B: 13x600s (@ f4.0, Gain 0, bin1x1)

Total exposure: 14.4 hours

The Rokinon 135/ASI183MM Pro lens/camera combination seems to be well suited for a wide-field imaging with a 5.6 deg x 3.7 deg FOV. Despite the short focal length, it still provides a ~3.8"/pixel scale (thanks to the tiny 2.4 micron pixels in ASI183) and a generous well depth of 15ke at zero gain.
