Description

M 46 ( also known as NGC 2437) is an Open Cluster located in the constellation Puppis. It also has a planetary nebula NGC 2438 in the image which is actually in the foreground object and not part of the open cluster. M 46 iis described as "very bright,very rich and very large" and located about 5,500 light year away from earth. It is almost circular in shape and contains over 500 member stars. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771.
