Description

The Horsehead Nebula is nebula of dark gas and dust approximately 1,500 light years from Earth. I was somewhat surprised to learn that the cloud forming the distinctive horsehead shape is only 3-4 light years tall and 2-3 light years across. The dark cloud of the Horsehead nebula stands out because it is silhouetted against the bright emission nebula IC 434 which is being ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The Horsehead Nebula is particularly special to me as it was the first deep sky object my oldest son Ben learned about.
