Description

Located roughly 2500-2700 light-years away, this star forming region has many distinct features such as diffuse nebula and a cluster of stars. The Cone nebula, which is only 2 light-years wide and 7 light-years long forms a cold dark gas pillar in the shape of a funnel. Also included in this area, is the Christmas Tree Cluster, which forms a silhouette of a tree on its side, along with the surrounding nebula. The brightest star in this image, 15 Mon, marks the base of the tree and the funnel-shaped Cone Nebula forms the peak.
