Description

M46 is a beautiful, dense open cluster made even more interesting by the presence of a well developed planetary nebula. This object does seem to be involved with the cluster itself, rather than a foreground object. There is also hints of an extended shell, with clearly visible red nebulosity six of seven radia above (in this frame) the planetary. There are hints of red nebulosity at approximately equal distance at various points around the nebula as well. A much deeper exposure might show this extended shell, or portions of it, as if it exists it has likely been greatly disrupted by the cluster stars in its environment.
