Description

55 selected images, exposed for 1 second @ 3200 ISO, gathered over a 15 minute time period (12:11am - 12:26am ET).

Used PIPP to debayer, analyze, center and crop the raw images.

Used PixInsight FFTRegistration to register 100 of the best images ranked by PIPP, preserving the registered files to output directory, then ImageIntegration process to integrate the 55 best using Linear Fit , average, ranked by noise evaluation.

I chose the Canon Rebel with the APC sensor and 6SE tube partly due to simplicity and ease of use of available backyard equipment and the size of the full moon. I have a new ZWO ASI 183 MC, but even with a focal reducer on a 6SE tube cannot quite fit the full moon without cropping. The Rebel is easy to work with due to its “live view” movable screen and manual controls. The Rebel’s Wifi connectivity with the iPhone app is neat but uses too much battery and is a pain to reconnect when you’re trying to get something done.

It was *very* cold outside here in North Carolina at midnight, breezy and about 25 degrees F. I was really concerned the CGEM would be impossible to align and would act up like it has on some cold nights, but it fired up and tracked great after a "2 Star Align" (I had Polar Aligned the mount the night before and left it outside covered with a heavy water proof tarp) and one calibration star near the moon. I waited until it got cold (was in the 50s F earlier in the day), plugged things in and turned them on, and did the alignment routine around 10:30pm ET. Then an alignment "Sync" on the moon, focused and centered in the camera view finder.

Power supply used for the mount was the new Celestron portable, double sized version of its lithium power tank, strapped to a tripod leg. Camera power supply for the session took 1 Canon battery and 1 third party brand, Powerextra, battery (which always seems to work better in the cold than the Canon branded ones).
