Description

This is a 2 panel mosaic of the Horsehead and Flame nebulas taken 1/3/19 and 1/13/19. It is my first attempt at an astrophotography mosaic so it was definitely a learning process when it came to the processing and combining of the two images.

The Horsehead and Flame nebulae are emission nebulae and are part of the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The Flame nebula is being ionized by the blue super giant star, Alnitak, the easternmost star in Orion's belt. The core of the nebula contains a cluster of newly formed stars which are blocked from our perspective by the large dark gas cloud near the center of the flame.
