Description

M51 (The Whirlpool Galaxy)

Estimated to be approximately 23 million light years away, the Whirlpool Galaxy is a fantastic example of a galactic merger. It is smaller than our own galaxy spanning around 43,000 light years with about 160 billion solar masses. M51 is bright enough that it can be seen with smaller telescopes and even with binoculars if light pollution is not severe.
