Description

NGC 2489 is a young 8.5 magnitude open cluster located near 4th magnitude Chi Puppis. It was discovered by astronomer William Herschel in 1785.

NGC 2489 is about 3.9 pc (∼12 900 a.l.) distant from the sun and the latest estimates give an age of 18.4 million years. The apparent size of the cluster is 5 minutes of arc, which, given the distance, gives a maximum actual size of about 19 light years.

According to the classification of open clusters by Robert Trümpler, this cluster contains between 50 and 100 stars (letter m) whose concentration is average (II) and which the magnitudes are spread over an average interval .

Another smaller and fainter cluster visible in the lower center of the photo is the 11.7 magnitude Haffner 20.
