Description

Here's my lastest astro shot taken from my roof here in Kampala. The Carina Nebula is an immense cloud of gas and dust where stellar birth and death is taking place. The nebula is located an estimated 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina the Keel.

This nebula, like so many other's I enjoy photographing is a stellar nursery creating new stars. But also stars are dying violent deaths here, which creates all our elements. Dying stars create elements from hydrogen, and nebula like this gather those elements into new stars, which are tossed out into the universe. All the oxygen in the air and water, and the carbon in your bones came from this cycle of death and rebirth. You are all made of star stuff, as Carl Sagan once said.
