Description

This object is a very faint planetary nebula located 1,800 light-years away in the southern constellation of Lepus. The nebula is 8 light years in diameter. The central star (WD 0500-156) is the faint bluish star in the center of the nebula.

This a tough one to image and process. It is one of the few planetary nebula for which the outer extent of the nebula (usually a sphericial shape) does not stand out well. The brightest part of the nebula are numerous reddish Ha regions located in the inner part of the nebula. These Ha regions appear to me to be the result of polar outflows, since they are brightest on opposite sides of the nebula. The cyan OIII region is not spherical but more of an oval shape, which is unusual. Interestingly, this object is the largest planetary nebula which is not interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium.

Several faint distant galaxies provides a nice backdrop for the nebula. The galaxy on the left is PGC16611. The galaxies on the right are harder to see and even harder to identify. Astrobin identifies an object on the right as IC 400, but most experts believe that this object is simply a star. The "real" IC 400 is probably a bit further right, one of the two tiny faint galaxies seen in the full resolution view. The 16th magnitude spindle galaxy is 6dFGS gJ050345.6-154909, located 160 million light years away. Just above it, partially hidden by a star, is 17th magnitude galaxy PGC 905996, located over 400 million light years away.
