Description

At first I thought I was just seeing a lens flare, then as the stacking progressed, I could see the lens flare had a faint central blue star. That's no lens flare, that's a planetary nebula.

The image is a bit noisy because of my suburban sky glow. I should re-image this with my IDAS light pollution filter. The star colors, diffraction patterns and such came out quite nicely here. Way off to the left in the uncropped version of the image, there were three faint galaxies too, but not interesting enough to make me want the image to be any larger than it already is.

Considering how well it competes with the glow of Mu Orionis I am thinking that this might be one of the few easily visually observable Abell planetaries at magnitude 12.4. Most Abell planetaries are crazy dim. You would just have to get Mu just out of the field of view or block it with an occulting bar. At 40 arc seconds across, it has a fairly high surface brightness.
