Description

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula some 1,500 light years distant in the Orion molecular cloud complex. The object was discovered on a photographic plate in 1888 by Williamina Fleming (1857 -1911).

To the left of the horse is the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024, Sh 2-277) – an emission nebula around 900–1,500 light years from.

Just below the horse is NGC 2023 – an emission and reflection nebula first observed by William Herschel on 6 January 1785.

Other nebulae in this picture are IC 431, IC 432 and IC 435.

Data for this image were collected from a remote imaging rig in Spain that is jointly owned and operated by Barry Wilson and me. Data collection took place between 30 December 2018 and 27 January 2019.
