Charles Messier entdeckte am 3. Mai 1764 diesen beeindruckenden Kugelsternhaufen im Sternbild Jagdhunde. Mit über 500 000 Sternen gehört er zu den Sternreichsten dieser Art. Sein Gezeiten Durchmesser beträgt 226 Lichtjahre in einer Entfernung von 33900 Lichtjahren. Die Ausdehnung beträgt ca. 18 Bogenminuten. Bisher sind 224 Variable Sterne nachgewiesen. Mit rund 4% an schweren Elementen im Vergleich zur Sonne gilt Messier 3 als sehr metallreich und ist Prototyp dieser Klasse von Kugelsternhaufen.
Charles Messier discovered on 3 May 1764 the impressive globular cluster in the constellation Canes Venatici. With over 500,000 stars, it is one of the star-rich of its species. Its tidal diameter is 226 light-years at a distance of 33900 light-years. The expansion is about 18 arcmin. So far, 224 variable stars have been detected. With around 4% of heavy elements compared to the Sun, Messier 3 is considered to be very metal-rich and is the prototype of this class of globular clusters.
