Description

The Rosette Nebula (Caldwell 49, SH2-275) is a large HII emission nebula in Monoceros. Various NGC objects make up this formation, including NGC 2244 which is the star cluster in the middle. The nebula magnitude is said to be 9.0. The objects apparent dimension is 1.3 degrees. It lies about 5,200 light years away and is 130 light years in diameter.

This was an experiment with narrowband filters. I made various combinations of RGB assignments, and could not decide which I liked, so I created an animated GIF transitioning one to another for all 6 combinations.

The RGB layers were assigned to:

HA OIII SII

HA SII OIII

OII HA SII

OIII SII HA

SII HA OIII

SII OIII HA

and they are shown in the GIF in that order.

Imaging data:

Date: Jan 2019

Location: New Ringgold PA

Optics: Takahashi FSQ106ED

Camera: ZWO ASI 1600MM

Guiding: ZWO ASI 174 mini on Orion ST80

Exposure: HA 35x5min OIII 18x5min SII 12x5 min for a total of 5.4 hours or 87x300 sec.

Processing: Image acquisition using CCD Autopilot. Initial processing was done using Maxim DL with subsequent processing using Photoshop. The website EZGIF.COM was used to make the final image.
