Description

The highlight of the month, of course, was my first shot at a total lunar eclipse since I got into astrophotography. I wasn't sure I even get the chance, but a winter storm cleared out just in time for icy roads and wind chills below -10˚F. I didn't get started early enough to shoot the whole eclipse sequence, though, and a meteorite struck the moon during a 6 second gap in my frames while I was changing the camera ISO. Because of course it did.

With no sequence of phases or interesting foreground objects available, I concentrated on capturing as much detail as possible on the lunar surface, and I added a longer exposure of the background to bring out the surrounding star field. I entered another frame from this series into a "lunar eclipse" photo contest and took first place by a wide margin.
