Description

This alternative version of my image of the Carina Nebula was created simply for discussion with fellow astroimagers, and not as a mainstay of my gallery. I am not really a fan of the colors in this version, but ....

Question: What palette was used to color-combine Ha, OIII and SII data to create this image?

Answer: It was color-combined using exactly the same palette (and data) as my main version of the image (also on Astrobin) - the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) palette.

However, this image was processed slightly differently to obtain a very different (and unusual) result. Instead of balancing the histograms (which I would typically do), an image with starkly different hues was produced by stretching the RGB channels differently. This should be obvious, but I thought it was interesting to highlight that, although the palette used to assign narrowband image data to RGB channels is very important, so too is how you process – and how adamant you may or may not be about balancing the histograms of narrowband images.

Standard Text:

NGC 3372, also known as the Eta Carina Nebula, is a large, complex and very bright nebula approximately 6,500 to 10,000 light years away in the constellation of Carina.

This image was processed in PixInsight using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) palette (Red = SII, Green = Ha, Blue = OIII), with a synthetic luminance blended from all three colour components. It has been drizzle integrated to increase resolution to approx. 0.6 arcsec/pixel.
