Arp 245

This image captures four small interacting galaxies, located about 100 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra. The details are best seen in the full resolution view.

The two interacting spiral galaxies at center are the longer galaxy NGC 2992 (magnitude 12.2) and the face-on spiral NGC 2993 (magnitude 12.6). The tidal stream connecting the two larger galaxies is emanating from both ends of the longer spiral. This interaction has spurred vigorous star formation in the face-on galaxy, which is evident from the brighter areas visible to the right of its core. The interaction has also shaped the long arm of the face-on galaxy which extends to the left. The entire dual galaxy system, including the outer distorted star streams of both galaxies, has a apparent width of 8 minutes (about 250,000 light years).

The most interesting aspect of this image to me are the cores of both galaxies. NGC 2993 has numerous bright regions which are probably either Ha regions or super star clusters. NGC 2992 has a wide, dark dust band which obscures the core. NGC 2992 is a Seyfert galaxy.

Within NGC 2992, above the core, is a dense tidal star region which is actually a dwarf galaxy, identified as A245N. Towards the bottom of the image is the flat edge-on galaxy known as FGC 0938. Flat galaxies have a length much longer than their width, in this case 11 times as long. Studies have shown that this flat galaxy is also part of the interaction, although it doesn't yet look disturbed to me.
